Why is my hair breaking off at the roots?

I woke up this morning and found that right at the pinnacle of my scalp i had a chunk of broken off hair. Why is this happening? I haven't changed hair care products or medication or anything. Please explain before I go insane!!

Do you dye your hair? if you do, then stop...your hair is probably too burnt out and fried which is why it is breaking at the roots. You obviously are using something in your hair that its literally eating it away...
